Privacy
The site has no accounts, forms, ads or advertising cookies. Here is everything it stores and sends, and how to opt out of what is optional.
Google Analytics: your choice
Google Analytics shows us how people play and where visitors come from. In the European Economic Area (the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway), the UK and Switzerland it is off until you allow it; elsewhere it is on until you decline it. You can change your choice here at any time.
In your browser
Your settings (the look, the theme and how the game reacts to clicks and taps), your statistics (games played and won, records, streaks, the last few games of each size) and your tries at the daily boards are saved in your browser, in its local storage, so that they are there on your next visit. They are not sent anywhere; of the daily tries only whether a game is your first try at that board goes with the game statistics below. To delete them, use Reset in the statistics window or clear this site’s data in your browser. The site sets no cookies. Your choice about Google Analytics below is kept there too, for a year.
Game statistics
While you play, the page sends us what happens in the game: that a game started and how it ended (won, lost or left), the board size, the time, the time the page was on screen, the number of clicks, hints and undos, how much of the board was opened, the language of the page, and for a daily board its date and whether it is your first try at it. Nothing that points to you or your visit is stored with it: no IP address, cookie or other identifier, and these requests are left out of the server log too. So a record cannot be linked to you. We keep the records event by event, to see how the boards play and to show the results of the daily boards. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in improving the game (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). To turn this off in your browser, open any page with ?notrack at the end of its address.
Google Analytics
If it is on, Google Analytics (Google Ireland Limited, Google LLC) sets the cookies _ga and _ga_… for up to 2 years and receives the same game events, along with the pages you open, your approximate location (the country and the city, worked out from your IP address, which Google Analytics does not keep), your device and your browser. Google processes this data on our behalf and may transfer it to the US under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework. Data linked to a visitor is kept for 2 months; this setting does not apply to Google’s aggregated reports. We do not use Google Signals or Google’s advertising features. The legal basis is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR) in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, and our legitimate interest elsewhere. Google Privacy Policy
Server logs
Like any web server, ours keeps a log of requests: a shortened IP address (without its last part, so it points to a network rather than a device), the page address, the time, the page you came from, the browser and the response code. The log is kept for 14 days to protect the site from abuse and to fix errors, and is then deleted. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in running the site safely (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
Your rights
Under the GDPR, you can ask what data we hold about you, have it corrected or deleted, object to its processing, and complain to a data protection authority. The data in your browser is only there and you can delete it yourself; the game statistics contain nothing that identifies you, and the server log does not hold your full IP address, so we usually cannot find your records in them.
