Intermediate Minesweeper: 16×16, 40 mines

The classic middle size and the first one on this site: 256 cells and 40 mines, about 16%. On average the first click opens a quarter of the safe cells.

Of the moves after it, 96% follow from one number and 4% need two numbers compared. So a game is mostly steady work along the edge of the open area, with a pattern now and then. At the very end, in about one game in fifty, the mine counter decides the last cells.

How to play Minesweeper

Mines are hidden under the cells of the board. The goal is to open every cell without a mine. Each number shows how many mines are in the eight cells around it, and from these numbers you can tell exactly where a mine is and where it is safe. In detail: rules and techniques with examples →
